Upon
first hearing the title of Nick Hornby’s article, I was not sure exactly what
to expect. However the article did bring
up some interesting concepts. I liked how
the security guard grew to like and want to protect the racy photo even after
he initially had a strong distaste for it. It seems that the more time that the
security guard spent with the picture, he developed a greater appreciation for
it. I think this article highlights a key concept of art-the varying ways in
which artwork can be interpreted. Even
though the picture was controversial, the security guard still grew to
appreciate the photo as it was creation made by someone who put carefully
thought and planned out this artwork.
There were many critics of the work who perceived the artwork being
blasphemous. Through this, I was able to
realize the importance of appreciating others artwork even if it is not
something readily accepted especially at first glance.
I
disliked Martha’s reasoning behind creating the work. As I was reading the article, I kept waiting
for the grand explanation of why Martha would have created such a work. It was revealed that she essentially created
this work of art for it to be ultimately destroyed. I was expecting a more
elaborate explanation behind the meaning of this controversial creation.
